The form plays on the balance between mass and void. It evokes a miniature architecture, with its beams, openings, and support points.

The piece is made of porcelain stoneware. The caramel glaze envelops the volumes in a warm and luminous surface. Broad, opaque white streaks, applied in elongated movements, cross the piece and emphasize the horizontal tension of the form. The surface retains numerous intentionally marked tool marks, which catch the light and give the object a very tactile presence. The decoration arises from the material, the gesture, and the construction.

Nakata Akimori, 中田明守, is a ceramist from Kanazawa associated with contemporary Kutani ware. Japanese records state he was born in 1934. He graduated in 1953 from the ceramics section of the Ishikawa Prefectural Technical High School, then became a member of the Japan Craft Design Association and the Ishikawa Craft Design Association. Recognized as a dentō kōgeishi, a traditional Kutani craftsman, he taught at the Utatsuyama Kōgei Kōbō and participated in the juries of craft exhibitions in Kanazawa.

His work is distinguished by a modern approach to Kutani. Japanese sources refer to a "Nakata style," based on seikatsu-kōgei, craftsmanship designed for everyday life. In this piece, this sensibility becomes more sculptural: the vase leaves the realm of tableware to become an open, almost architectural construction, where voids are as important as volumes.

Artist's stamp on the side of the foot.
