The smooth, dark upper part features a satiny black surface, slightly metallic in places, with a dense material that catches the light without excessive glare. The lower part is adorned with a decoration of incised or molded scales, organized into regular registers, which gives the object an almost organic presence.

The work belongs to a modern vein of Japanese ceramics from the late 20th century. Sugiyama Hōju worked in Hagi, but in a very personal style, far removed from the more expected forms of tea ceramics. Here, the research focuses on the tension between volume, the black surface, and the graphic rhythm of the decoration. The vase maintains great sobriety while asserting a strong sculptural presence.

The vase is preserved with its original tomobako, signed on the lid. The inscription reads 杉山 / 芳寿造, or Sugiyama Hōju zō, "made by Sugiyama Hōju". The piece is dated 1991, placing it at the beginning of the Heisei era.

Dimensions: 28.4 × 17 × 10 cm.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0957/8568/1242/files/C975993A-9A8B-44E2-A08C-A426DB3CC9E7.jpg?v=1777641765
https://sinapango.com/en/products/vase-en-ceramique-noire-par-sugiyama-hoju-%e6%9d%89%e5%b1%b1%e8%8a%b3%e5%af%bf-japon-heisei-1991
