The freely cut opening accentuates the movement of the form.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBorn in 1931 in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, Kiyoyuki Kato grew up in a family of roof-tile makers and acquired an early, practical knowledge of clay. He was also drawn to drawing, painting and sculpture. In his twenties, his meeting with Sofu Teshigahara, founder of the Sogetsu school of ikebana, encouraged him to approach ceramics as an art of form and space. Teshigahara collected his works and arranged flowers in them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eKato developed a practice based on direct engagement with the material. He incised the clay while it was still soft, using knives and simple tools, making relief, pattern and structure part of a single composition. He worked in both clay and porcelain, exploring the latter’s whiteness, delicacy and translucency. His output ranged from miniature vases to large ceramic wall panels.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHe received the Grand Prize at the Asahi Ceramic Exhibition in 1964 and 1965, the Japan Ceramic Society Award in 1970, the Aichi Prefecture Arts and Culture Award in 1979, and the Prime Minister’s Award at the Japan New Craft Exhibition in 1984. He was also awarded the Japan Ceramic Society Gold Prize in 2007. His works are held in collections including the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; the National Crafts Museum; the Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum; the Victoria and Albert Museum; and Canterbury Museum.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eJapan, circa 1970–1990.
