Five-compartment Jubako box, Japan, Meiji period, circa 1880
Description
Five-compartment jubako box, Japan, circa 1880
This jubako consists of five superimposed modules, accompanied by two lids. This structure allows the box to be divided into two distinct stacks: one of three compartments, the other of two, each of which can be closed with its own lid. This modularity is explained by the ceremonial use of jubako, food boxes reserved for major celebrations such as New Year's Day or Tango no Sekku, the Boys' Festival.
Depending on the number of guests or the nature of the dishes, all or part of the compartments were used.
Scroll decoration of very beautiful quality, drawn in gold.
The stack of two compartments plus lid measures 15.5 x 23.5 x 22 cm
The stack of three compartments plus lid measures 22.5 x 23.5 x 22 cm
All elements are modular.
Original storage box.
