Large carved wooden figure, Japan, early Heian period 794 - 1185
Rare representation of a Juni Shinshi.
Also known as the Twelve Heavenly Generals, they serve as protectors of Yakushi Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha.
Their fierce expressions reflect their anger towards evil deeds and individuals. The general depicted in this work is possibly Hakkara with his hair standing on end, called flame hair, his hands would have drawn a sword in a threatening manner.
