Description

Kawamoto Goro was born in 1919 and died in 1986.

This stoneware tea ceremony water pot, with its slightly irregular round shape and grainy surface, perfectly embodies his approach. The earthy tones, ranging from gray to reddish brown, evoke a deep connection with natural elements, while the piece's subtle imperfections demonstrate a unique sensitivity to texture and material.

Kawamoto Goro's career has been marked by a constant pursuit of excellence and innovation. After studying at the Aichi Ceramics School and the Kyoto National Ceramics Research Institute, he was drafted into the army and sent to China during World War II. Upon his return to Japan in 1946, he was adopted by Kawamoto Isotei, a master of blue and white ceramics, under whose guidance he refined his skills. However, his personal quest led him to explore new techniques and forms, gradually distancing himself from his master's influence.

His efforts were quickly recognized, both in Japan and internationally.

In 1953, Kawamoto was first selected for the Nitten exhibition, marking the beginning of his public recognition. He continued to achieve success, winning prestigious awards such as the Grand Prix at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair and the 1959 California International Exposition. These international accolades opened the doors to museums around the world. His works are now part of the collections of renowned museums, such as the Tokyo National Museum, the Kyoto Museum of Modern Art, the Musée de la Céramique de Sèvres in France, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In the United States, his work is also exhibited in major institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum and the Minneapolis Institute of Art, where it continues to fascinate and inspire.
