Vase Nariyoshi Jin 1942-2012 Mashiko
Description
Nariyoshi Jin (1942-2012) ceramicist from Mashiko was born in Gifu.
After graduating from a postgraduate program at Tokyo University of the Arts, he founded his own kiln in 1973.
His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Japanese Traditional Crafts Exhibition. He also received an Honorable Mention at the Musashino Exhibition and the Grand Prize at the Prefectural Art Festival.
A regular member of the Japanese Arts and Crafts Society, Nariyoshi Jin was distinguished primarily by his iron glazing and chamfering techniques, as evidenced by this vase.
Under the pseudonym Nanda Koreya, he was also known as a filmmaker, creating ceramic dolls with very round shapes and a singular style which he then animated.
While pieces like this vase, dated 1975, are rooted in Mashiko's legacy, her animated characters have allowed her to explore more contemporary artistic forms.
