Description

This study vase by Mizuno Sōkaku (1912-1997) captivates with its organic, flattened, and slightly bulbous shape, reminiscent of both a polished pebble and a seed ready to bloom. Made from very rough chamotte clay, the surface reveals white inclusions reminiscent of porcelain shards, while fine circular striations mark the throwing and shaping work. The small, discreet neck emphasizes the piece's intentional asymmetry. Under the base, a period label specifies that this is a study vase, testifying to a bold formal research for the time and in the artist's early years.

The vase is preserved in its tomobako (original wooden box), the interior of which bears an inscription dated October 1931 (Shōwa 6 era), a valuable asset, providing a perfectly documented provenance and dating.

Born in Seto, one of the great capitals of Japanese ceramics, Mizuno Sōkaku was a student of Fujii Tatsukichi. Winner of the Toto Award at the National Ceramics Exhibition, the Kansai Art Exhibition Prize, and the Governor's Award at the Asahi Ceramics Exhibition, he was also a member of the jury for the Tokai Television Awards at the Japan New Crafts Exhibition. A multiple recipient of the Nitten Chunichi Award, he has held solo exhibitions at Maruei Nagoya and participated in international exhibitions in Germany, New Zealand, and the United States. His works are now part of the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. A specialist in nerikomi (mixed clay), he has left his mark on modern ceramics with a subtle exploration of textures and contrasts. His son took over the kiln.

A unique and documented piece, this study vase illustrates the early creativity of a master of Seto ceramics.
