Vase Sataro Mizukami 1913-2001 Tokoname
Description
This vase by Sataro Mizukami (1913-2001) shows a rather rare example of his work. The clay is deeply incised and outlined with black lines that increase its dynamics in a very international style.
Sataro Mizukami worked in Tokoname, one of the six ancient pottery regions of Japan.
Born in Yokohama, he moved to Tokoname with the support of his grandmother. He became an apprentice to Masayama Nagayanagi.
After the Second World War, at the age of 35, he returned from the continent to devote himself to ceramics, particularly the creation of bonsai pots, a field in which he excelled and acquired a great reputation.
His work with ash glaze is particularly renowned. Mizukami has been selected several times for prestigious exhibitions, such as the Tokai Traditional Arts Exhibition, and has won numerous awards, including the Choza Prize. He was also an active member of the Tokoname Ceramics Association, founded by Tsuneyama Yamada.
Sataro Mizukami continued to work until his last day at the age of 88.
