This remarkable piece by Kato Toyohisa, a master of Shino glazes, a ceramic technique dating back to the 16th century and often associated with the tea ceremony (Chanoyu). The unique shape of this piece, reminiscent of a boat or a folded leaf, showcases Kato Toyohisa's technical mastery and originality. The piece features an impressive contrast between the body of the work and the rich feldspar glaze that partially covers it. The crackled texture and subtle shades of white and orange-brown create a unique aesthetic.

Kato Toyohisa was born in 1962 into a family of potters specializing in the production of Western-style tableware. After high school, he enrolled at the Gifu Prefectural Ceramic Research Institute, where he studied under Hayashi Shotaro.

Alongside his contributions to the family business, he began creating his own works and quickly found success in various ceramic art competitions. His accolades include the Asahi Ceramics New Talent Award and the Grand Prize at the Tajimi Art Exhibition in 1983, as well as the Excellence Award at the Gifu Art Exhibition in 1988.

He also won the Shoroku Prize at the Shoroku Mino Art Tea Bowl Exhibition in 1995.
