Description

Ohata Hisashi (1933-2021) was born in Tottori Prefecture and studied at Kyoto University of Arts and Crafts.

After graduating, he pursued an independent career from 1972. Specializing in Satsuma pottery, he became a prominent figure in this tradition, focusing particularly on the Kuro-Satsuma style.

In the West, we are mainly familiar with Shiro-Satsuma, a thin, white paste, generally adorned with complex decorations, painted in polychrome enamels, floral motifs, scenes from courtly life or elements of nature. These refined and precious pieces were mainly intended for export and the imperial court.

In contrast, Kuro-Satsuma has a thick, iron-rich black glaze, giving the pieces a more raw and imposing appearance. More rarely, as in this simple, irregularly shaped vase, the earth is white, presenting a rough texture, with a pronounced crackled surface, without decoration. They are sometimes called white Kuro-Satsuma.

Ohata Hisashi held important positions, such as vice-president of his prefecture's Fine Arts Society, member of Nitten, and president of the Kuro-Satsuma Association.

Recognized for his mastery and commitment to the art of ceramics, his works were exhibited at the Kodama Museum of Art in Kagoshima, which also paid him a posthumous tribute.
