Vase titled “White Wicker Pot” ceramic, Toshi Nishikawa, 2006
Description
The vase entitled White Wicker Pot, presented at Toki Nishikawa's solo exhibition in 2006 at the Keyaki Gallery in Osaka, is a stoneware piece measuring 36 cm in height and 34 cm in diameter. Its surface is punctuated by white bands with a grainy texture, demarcated by sharp incisions that structure the form. The contrast between the rough areas and the smoother parts is based on a sober and precise plastic logic. The spherical volume is slightly tightened at the neck.
Toki Nishikawa was born in 1927 in Kishiwada, Osaka Prefecture. He began working with ceramics late in life: it was only in 1994, at the age of 67, that he became a student of Furuya Toru, a renowned ceramist and member of the Japan Decorative Arts Association (Nihon Kōgeikai). Two years later, he built a noborigama kiln, a mark of his strong commitment to the Japanese ceramic tradition.
He exhibited regularly since the end of the 1990s: eight selections at the Shinsho Kōgeiten exhibition, eight participations in the Kansai Art Exhibition, seven in the Osaka Exhibition, as well as the Nenrin Pick 2000 event in Osaka. He received several awards, including the Kishiwada Mayor's Award and three times a special prize at the New Craftsmen Exhibition, as well as the Newcomer Award.
He is an active member of the Osaka Crafts Association and the Shinsho Kogyokai, and serves as a judge for the Kishiwada City Exhibition. His highly technical and personal work demonstrates a late but sustained commitment to the field of ceramics.
