Description

Matsuo Sofu II grew up in Arita, Saga Prefecture, the original ceramics town, and from childhood he studied under Sofu I, his father.

Born in 1947, he began his apprenticeship at a young age.

At the age of 20, in 1967, to master the production of tea utensils, he moved to Hagi and perfected his apprenticeship.

In 1973, he opened his own kiln and pottery workshop in Hagi and began producing Hagi works.

It was during this time that he began submitting his works to Nitten exhibitions and contemporary craft exhibitions in Japan.

Since 2002, he has exhibited his works at the Japanese Traditional Crafts Exhibition.

The pieces on display include hakuji (white porcelain), seihakuji (pale blue porcelain), and iroe porcelain painted with overglaze enamels, which he mastered during his years in Arita.

Currently, he plays an active role as a full member of the Japanese Kogei Association.

At the Sofu kiln, he produces both porcelain and Hagi pottery, continuing the family tradition while innovating in his art.
