KIZERUZUTSU IN UMIMATSU, IWAMI SCHOOL, EDO PERIOD, LATE 18TH, EARLY 19TH CENTURY
Description
Japan, kiseruzutsu in umimatsu, Iwami school, Edo period, late 18th, early 19th century
Rare kizeruzutsu, a pipe case made of umimatsu, black coral, also known as sea pine. The carver played with the natural material and its colors by using a simple motif of fingered citrons, also known as Buddha's hands. This type of work and the use of this material is quite characteristic of the Iwami region. Although it is unsigned, this kizeruzutsu is similar to the work of Seiyodon Tomoharu, 1733-1810.
It comes with a bamboo and silver-plated metal pipe.
