Description
Celadon lotus incense burner
China, Qing dynasty, Kangxi reign (1662–1722)
Lotus-shaped basin with lobed sides and a scalloped rim, resting on a small pedestal. In the center, a depiction of a Buddha seated in a full lotus position (結跏趺坐), wearing an uṣṇīṣa (肉髻), with his torso slightly tilted forward. His hands are joined in a prayer gesture (añjali mudrā; 合掌) and placed low, at the abdomen. His legs are crossed, and his feet remain visible beneath the glaze.
Celadon glaze in an aqua-green color with olive tones in areas of accumulation, featuring an old, irregular network of crackles and consistent firing irregularities: pinholes, micro-bubbles, small sporadic cavities, and ferruginous spots. The interior shows visible turning rings. The underside features a rather high annular foot with annular marks.
Rare model, due to the combination of a lotus basin and an integrated praying Buddha in the center, rendered in celadon, a rarely encountered typology.
Condition: very good state of preservation, without damage; visible marks are due to firing and manufacturing.
Dimensions: height 11 cm; diameter 13 cm.
