Description

Large vase with ears of corn, Kashiwagama, by Bandō Tōho, 1991

Large ovoid stoneware vase with a wide belly and short neck. The slightly irregular neck gives the silhouette a lively rhythm. The flared rim opens the form naturally.

The surface is covered with a dark, granular, ferruginous brown glaze. The ears of corn decoration stands out in white against the brown background. The tall stems and elongated leaves complement the verticality of the vase. The motif is simple, legible, and very graphic.

The piece is signed on the back and dated June 91. The Japanese label provides information about the author, Bandō Tōho, working at the Kashiwagama kiln in Asahikawa, Hokkaidō. The workshop is associated with the landscape of the Kamikawa basin, the Daisetsuzan massif, the volcanic lands of the region, and the presence of kashiwa oaks from which the kiln takes its name.

Good condition.

Dimensions: height 53.5 cm; diameter approximately 27 cm.
