Kazuhiko Satoh, large geometric vase, 1989
Description
This sculptural vase by Kazuhiko Satoh impresses with its angular shape and controlled tilt. The piece is constructed from carefully assembled stoneware slabs, into which the artist has incised linear patterns to encrust other earths in contrasting colors. These dark, irregular, and deep lines hollow out the mass and make it vibrate. The surface treatment remains matte, without glaze, which reinforces the effect of raw mineral. The beveled opening adds a graphic tension that contrasts with the apparent simplicity of the volume.
Kazuhiko Satoh (佐藤和彦), born in 1954 in Yamagata, graduated from the Ceramics Department of the Tokyo University of Fine Arts in 1979. Early on, he moved away from utilitarian forms to explore an abstract sculptural language based on assembly, cutting, and inlay. He developed a geometric approach to volume, often compared to that of contemporary Japanese architects. His work has been recognized with numerous awards, notably at the Japan Contemporary Arts and Crafts Exhibition and the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition. It is included in several public collections in Japan. Satoh also teaches ceramics at Musashino Art University.
This signed work measures 31.5 cm high, 48 cm wide and 23 cm deep.
