Set of jōka Buddhist temple flowers in carved and gilded wood

This ensemble comprises eighteen large lotus flowers, buds and leaves mounted on stems. The six fully opened blossoms have radiating, finely carved petals. They alternate with buds and broad leaves with strongly defined veins.

The use of carved and gilded wood distinguishes this ensemble from more recent examples, which are generally made of metal. Its scale and the presence of six flowers in the bouquet—rather than the four usually found in such compositions—make it particularly rare.

In Buddhism, the lotus rises unsullied from muddy water. It symbolizes purity of mind and spiritual awakening. The opening blossom evokes the gradual unfolding of knowledge.

The flowers are shown in a large vase available separately on the website. The vase is not included in the sale.

Fairly good condition. Wear and minor losses to the gilding consistent with age.
