Shiraishi Takeshizo, vase with yellow glaze and relief line decoration
Description
Shiraishi Takeshizo, Vase with Yellow Glaze and Raised Line Decoration
Japanese ceramic vase signed 白石武嗣造, preserved in its signed tomobako. The highly structured form features a narrow, flared neck, broad shoulders, and a body tapering towards the base, creating a silhouette that is both stable and elegant. The surface is covered with a luminous yellow glaze, enlivened by a vast decoration of curved raised lines that structures the entire piece.
The lid of the tomobako bears the inscription 黄釉鎬文 花瓶, which can be translated as "vase with raised line decoration under yellow glaze". This designation is particularly accurate. The decoration is not based on added paint, but on the work of the surface itself, where the modeled or incised lines organize the volume and subtly catch the light. The effect produced is both decorative and architectural.
Little biographical information is available about Shiraishi Takeshizo. He was a Japanese ceramist active in the second half of the 20th century.
This vase primarily captivates with the quality of its silhouette, the vibrant softness of its yellow glaze, and the refinement of its rhythmic decoration, which gives the surface a true sense of movement. It will appeal equally to an admirer of 20th-century Japanese ceramics and to an interior seeking a decorative piece that is understated yet distinctive.
