Vase, Toshihiko Takeda, Mashiko circa 2007
Description
Toshihiko Takeda was born in 1970 in Mashiko, a ceramics center in Tochigi Prefecture. He initially focused on sculpture and earned two diplomas in this field in 1997 and 1999, exhibiting his first works before returning to the family heritage. In 2000, he trained in ceramics with his father, the potter Takeda Toshio, and further developed the local Mashiko technique. He built his first kiln in 2011, which he moved the following year to Haga, and became a member of the Japan Kōgei Association. Winner of first prize in the "Lucy Rie" competition in 2015, he is regularly selected for exhibitions organized by the Japan Traditional Kōgei.
This vase illustrates his exploration of texture and rhythm. The slender silhouette tapers slightly before widening toward the base, creating a sculptural presence. The stoneware surface is covered with a matte, finely textured ochre glaze that catches the light without gloss. Long vertical drops emphasize the shape, and small dots of blue glaze, placed on the lip, enliven the design by creating subtle shimmers. The overall effect reflects the balance between architectural rigor and delicate color accents that characterizes Takeda's aesthetic.
