Ceramic vase, Masafumi Fujihara, Kyoto
Description
This glazed stoneware vase by Masafumi Fujihira (藤平正文) illustrates the great tradition of Kyoto ceramics from the 1960s and 1970s. Its spherical shape with a slightly narrowed neck provides a matte surface for a floral decoration applied in relief. Against a beige background with visible striations, flower and vine motifs unfold in black and white, highlighted by a satin glaze in slight relief that is deliberately not glossy. The contrast between the raw texture of the clay and the black and white glazes highlights the highly original technique.
The artist belongs to the third generation of the Fujihira workshop, established in Kyoto for over a century and now run by the fourth generation. This family business, located in the Gojozaka district, perpetuates the tradition of Kyoto stoneware (Kiyomizu-yaki) by combining classical forms with modern research.
The piece is preserved in its tomobako – the original signed wooden box – a guarantee of authenticity and an essential element for collectible Japanese ceramics.
Height: 24.5 cm – Width: 24 cm.
