Description

This ceramic vase by Hayashi Shōtarō (林正太郎, 1947–2017) illustrates the alliance between tradition and boldness that characterizes contemporary Japanese ceramics. Born in Toki, Gifu Prefecture, the historic birthplace of the Mino kilns, Hayashi established himself as one of the most influential artists of his generation.

Trained alongside his older brother Kōtarō, he quickly received major rewards: in 1968, first prize at the Gifu Prefectural Exhibition, then in 1971 the prestigious Governor's Prize at the Asahi Exhibition. Considered a pioneer, he was recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage Holder of Gifu Prefecture and an “Important Cultural Property” of his hometown of Toki. His works have been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries in Japan and internationally.

The piece presented is covered with the Manyosai glaze (万葉彩), a creation specific to Hayashi. The term 万葉 (manyō) evokes “the ten thousand leaves,” a poetic reference to the richness and multiplicity of shades. This glaze is linked to the Shino-Mino traditions, but deploys a unique chromatic range: pinkish reflections, blue iridescence, silver touches and smoky tones that seem to vibrate with the light.

The vertical, deliberately irregular shape accentuates the sculptural aspect of the vase. More than a simple container, it is a mineral and organic work, where earth, fire and color interact in a powerful balance.

This vase is a centerpiece for collectors of contemporary Japanese ceramics and for interior designers looking for unique objects.
