Fontainebleau gogotte fragment on base

This gogotte fragment has a slender, almost vertical silhouette, with volumes that seem to have been stretched and then folded into successive layers. The main mass develops into large, soft bulges, superimposed like fluid strata or a mineral drape. Viewed from the front, the shape narrows in the center before expanding into a rounded protrusion. From the side, it takes on an even more abstract character, somewhere between a frozen wave, an open shell, and an organic outgrowth. The matte, very finely grained surface retains the chalky softness characteristic of Fontainebleau gogottes.

The piece is presented here on a modern base, which isolates the form and accentuates its sculptural interpretation. This mounting is particularly suitable for a fragment of this quality, whose interest lies less in compact monumentality than in the impetus, torsion, and continuity of the folds. This specimen demonstrates what makes the finest gogottes unique: an entirely natural formation, yet whose formal power spontaneously evokes abstract sculpture.

Like other Fontainebleau gogottes, this fragment comes from natural sandstone concretions formed in the very fine sands of the region. Their beauty stems from both the fineness of their grain and the fluidity of their contours. Admired since modern times, they were sought after as natural curiosities and as true sculptures of nature. Their early presence at Versailles, under Louis XIV, contributed to their lasting prestige.

This specimen is distinguished by its unusual vertical development and the quality of its concentric folds, which give the form great visual tension despite the economy of means. The black base further reinforces this interpretation by clearly detaching the light mass in space.
