Fontainebleau gogotte fragment on a stand

This gogotte fragment has a slender, almost vertical silhouette, its volumes appearing to have been stretched and folded into successive layers. The principal mass develops in broad, supple ridges superimposed like fluid strata or mineral drapery. Seen from the front, the form narrows at the centre before expanding into a rounded projection. In profile it becomes still more abstract, suggesting a frozen wave, an open shell or an organic growth. Its matt, finely grained surface retains the chalk-like softness characteristic of Fontainebleau gogottes.

The piece is presented on a modern stand, isolating the form and emphasising its sculptural character. The mounting is particularly well suited to a fragment of this quality, whose interest lies less in compact monumentality than in the upward movement, torsion and continuity of its folds. It displays the quality that distinguishes the finest gogottes: an entirely natural formation whose formal power nevertheless evokes abstract sculpture.

Like other Fontainebleau gogottes, this fragment is a natural sandstone concretion formed in the region’s exceptionally fine sands. Their beauty derives from both the fineness of their grain and the fluidity of their contours. Admired since the early modern period, they were sought as natural curiosities and sculptures formed by nature. Their presence at Versailles under Louis XIV contributed to their enduring prestige.

This example is distinguished by its unusual vertical development and the quality of its concentric folds, which give the form considerable visual tension. The black stand further strengthens this effect by setting the pale mass clearly apart in space.
