19th Century Japanese Two-Section Ishō-Dansu, Wooden Clothing Chest with Iron Fittings

This large ishō-dansu, a Japanese tansu designed for storing clothes, features a simple yet powerful design, characteristic of high-quality utilitarian furniture from the late Edo period. The piece is composed of two superimposed chests, a modular design that once facilitated transport and domestic use, while giving the whole a very balanced presence.

The facade is animated by spectacular grain, with broad and deep waves that give the wood an almost painterly vibrancy. This richness of natural pattern contrasts with the rigor of the construction. The four large drawers occupy most of the composition: two upper drawers in the top section, then a large drawer and a lower drawer in the bottom section. On the right, a small compartment closed by a door reveals two interior drawers, a characteristic arrangement of storage tansu designed to organize linens and personal effects.

The dark metal fittings structure the facade without making it appear heavy.
