Cushion Made from an Antique Nishijin Obi

Contemporary cushion by Sinapango Interiors Paris, made in Paris from a high-quality antique Japanese obi dating from the 1950s.

The textile comes from a Nishijin obi, a Kyoto weaving tradition renowned for the richness of its brocades. The ground is entirely woven with gold thread and silk, giving the surface a deep, shifting, almost metallic light while preserving the softness of the textile.

The design combines paulownia flowers, or kiri, with flowers close to chrysanthemum motifs, both associated with Japanese imperial imagery. They are set against geometric wave patterns, with red, green, silver and gold accents. The contrast between the gold ground and the abstract pattern gives the cushion a strong yet refined decorative presence.

One variant made from the same textile has a vertical decorative line on the side, close to a small chain motif. The reverse is finished in a plain beige textile.
