Pair of Japanese shokudai candlesticks in engraved brass, Japan, mid-19th century.

Each candlestick stands on a gadrooned hemispherical base. A moulded, lobed collar marks the junction with the tall cylindrical stem, topped by a deep cup with a lobed rim. A central spike and an open metal framework ending in a ring crown the ensemble.

Engraved chrysanthemums and foliage cover the bases, stems and cups. The flowers stand out against a finely stippled ground. The brass patina displays golden, coppery and brown tones.

Price: €2,200 for the pair.

Dimensions: height 63.5 cm; base diameter 22.5 cm.
