Set of twenty-two lotus flowers, buds and leaves, or jōka, in gilt wood, Japan, 19th century.

Smaller than the large temple ensembles more commonly encountered, these flowers are distinguished by their delicacy. The slender stems, supple leaves and ribbed buds create a light, almost graphic silhouette. The old gilding has developed a fine patina, with warm tonal variations, natural wear and small marks that speak to the age of the ensemble.

In Buddhism, the lotus is one of the most powerful symbols. Rising from the mud and above the water without being stained, it evokes purity, awakening and spiritual transformation. Jōka flowers were intended for Buddhist altars, where they formed a lasting offering, a precious equivalent to fresh flowers.
