Description

Sonoda Yukiyasu, Large Disc-Vase with Concentric Decoration

Large ceramic disc-vase by Sonoda Yukiyasu (園田幸泰), of flattened circular form, resting on small, discreet feet. The work stands out due to its very rigorous, almost sculptural construction. The main face is organized by a vast bluish-grey circular field, punctuated at its center by a light medallion, while several concentric rings punctuate the periphery. The finely fluted edge further reinforces the architectural presence of the piece.

The concentric circles structure the viewing, guide the eye, and give the piece a sculptural presence. The very pure disc shape is animated by a sober glaze with muted nuances. The ensemble is as much sculpture as it is ceramics.

The biographical information currently available on Sonoda Yukiyasu remains limited. His name is, however, documented in the 1970s in Japanese publications related to the teaching of plastic arts and modeling, which suggests an artist attentive to the construction of form.

Due to its rare form and the sobriety of its decoration, this piece will appeal equally to a collector of modern Japanese ceramics and to an interior seeking a strong and graphic work.

Dimensions: height 39 cm.
