Yoshitaka Yasuhara 安原喜孝 — Work No. 4

Stoneware wall plaque built from slabs, in a construction close to itazukuri 板造り. The work combines an ash-toned surface, black glaze accents and an architectural relief made of planes, fragments, edges and openings. It belongs to the sculptural current of modern Japanese ceramics, where clay is no longer treated only as a closed vessel but as a constructed space.

The reverse bears a label reading 安原喜孝, Yoshitaka Yasuhara, and “No. 4”. The title Work No. 4 is therefore retained, without adding an undocumented date.

Born in 1936, Yoshitaka Yasuhara is Professor Emeritus at the University of Tsukuba. He belongs to a three-generation family of ceramic artists. His father, Yoshiaki Yasuhara, was awarded the Grand Prix at the Vallauris International Biennial of Ceramics in 1970.
